# At Last There Is a Number for What Used to Be a Suspicion: How Much Google’s AI Sees You

New AI report in Search Console: what it is and how to read it | Impactiq

At last there is a number for what used to be a suspicion: how much Google’s AI sees you. On 3 June 2026, Google added to **[Search Console an AI report](https://developers.google.com/search/blog/2026/06/gen-ai-performance-reports)** dedicated to impressions inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, and on 31 August 2026 it rolled it out to every site in the world. The data now exists. The question is what to do with it.

## What has changed in Search Console with the new generative AI reporting?

Search Console now has a dedicated report, under “Performance → Generative AI”, that isolates the impressions your website receives specifically inside AI Overviews and AI Mode, separated from the rest of the traditional search results.

Until now, those impressions were mixed into the overall total: you knew they existed, but you could not isolate them by page, country, device or date. That information gap closes, although not entirely — as [Google itself confirms](https://www.searchenginejournal.com/google-reports-ai-search-impressions-how-to-read-them/582824/), the aggregate figures for your account do not change; it is a new breakdown, not new data.

## The difference between classic impressions and impressions inside AI Overviews / AI Mode

A classic impression counts when your result appears in the traditional list of blue links. An AI impression counts when one of your URLs appears in, or serves as a basis for, an answer generated by AI Overviews or AI Mode, without that necessarily involving a click.

The report comes with a breakdown by page, country, device and date, but for now leaves out clicks, CTR, average position, and which specific part of the answer used your content. Experimental Search Labs features are excluded, and generative content inside Discover is reported separately.

## Why this data matters even if the click never comes

An impression without a click is not useless data: it tells you whether your brand is present at the moment someone forms an opinion about your category, even if that person never visits your website. It is the equivalent of knowing whether you are in the conversation, not just whether they buy from you.

In categories where the decision is formed before clicking on anything — comparisons, early research, informational questions — being cited without a click is still better than not appearing at all. The problem is that, for now, there is no native way to demonstrate that value with a conversion figure.

## What to do if your brand is cited but traffic is not rising

If the report shows growing impressions in AI Overviews but your organic traffic stays flat, it is not necessarily a sign of failure: it may mean you are resolving the user’s query without them needing to visit the website, something structural to the format, not a mistake on your part.

What is worth reviewing is whether the cited passage represents your brand and your offer well. Without position data or the exact fragment used, the only way to check today is to manually replicate your sector’s questions in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s own AI Mode — the same exercise we documented in our [guide to answer-first structure for AI Overviews](/en/google-ai-overviews/).

## How to cross-reference this report with your usual metrics without duplicating work

The Search Console AI report does not replace the rest of your metrics; it complements them: cross AI impressions per page with your usual conversion rate and your classic organic traffic to see whether a page with many AI impressions and few clicks needs a different adjustment from one with the reverse pattern.

Google has also added a control to exclude content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and Discover if you so decide — with inclusion as the default. Switching it off without a real reason is usually a bad idea: you give up brand visibility without gaining anything in return, except in very specific cases of strict editorial control.

## What content tends to appear most in these answers (with examples from our portfolio)

Content with a direct answer at the start, verifiable data with cited sources, and a clear heading structure tends to appear more in AI Overviews than narrative content without that discipline — the same criterion we already apply in our GEO methodology for clients.

In accounts where we actively work on GEO, the pattern repeats: articles with a clear definition section and cited data in the first lines concentrate more AI impressions than purely promotional pages, even when both rank similarly in classic search.

## Table: what the new report includes (and what it does not)

| Includes | Does not include (yet) |
| --- | --- |
| Impressions per page | Clicks |
| Breakdown by country and device | CTR |
| Time series (hourly to monthly) | Average position |
| Separation of AI Overviews / AI Mode vs Discover | Exact passage cited |

## How we work on this at Impactiq

We review this report alongside our own panel of questions by sector, the part Search Console still does not cover: it is not enough to know there are impressions, you need to know which specific question generated them and whether the answer represents you well. It is the same discipline we apply in [SEO for AI](https://impactiq.es/en/seo-for-ai/), now with an official Google data point as a complement, not a substitute.

If you want to know how many AI impressions your website is already generating and which specific questions trigger them, [we will show you in 30 minutes](https://impactiq.es/en/contact/).

## Frequently asked questions

When did Google launch the AI report in Search Console?

On 3 June 2026, with a limited initial rollout, and on 31 August 2026 it was extended to every site in the world.

What data does the new Search Console AI report include?

Impressions by page, country, device and date inside AI Overviews and AI Mode. It does not include clicks, CTR, average position or the exact passage cited.

Is an AI impression any use if it does not generate a click?

Yes, it indicates brand presence at the moment someone forms an opinion about a category, even if they do not visit the website. There is still no native way to turn that into a conversion figure.

Can I exclude my website from AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Yes, Google added an exclusion control with inclusion as the default. Switching it off without a reason usually means giving up brand visibility without gaining anything in return.

What type of content appears most in AI Overviews?

Content with a direct answer at the start, verifiable data with cited sources and a clear heading structure, as opposed to narrative content without that discipline.
