There Are Now Ads in ChatGPT. Your Competitors Are Also Wondering Whether It Is Worth It
ChatGPT Ads has been live in Spain since August 2026. What ads in ChatGPT are, how they are targeted by context and what it costs to advertise now.

There are now ads in ChatGPT. Since 24 August 2026, Spain has been part of OpenAI’s expansion to 31 European markets, and the first advertisers are already reporting a CTR of between 1.5% and 3.2% — far above the 0.35% average for traditional display. Your competitors are also asking themselves whether it is worth getting in now.
What is ChatGPT Ads and why is it different from everything you already manage?
ChatGPT Ads is OpenAI’s advertising system: labelled ads that appear below ChatGPT’s answer, never mixed into it, and chosen according to the full context of the conversation, not a single isolated keyword.
The fundamental difference from Google Ads or Meta is not where the ad appears, but how it is selected. On Meta you describe the person you want to reach; in ChatGPT you describe the moment when your product solves something. The dashboard changes, but above all the craft of whoever builds the campaign changes.
When it arrived in Spain and who can see it (and who cannot)
Spain has had access since 24 August 2026, as part of the European expansion to 31 countries, with more than 8.5 million weekly ChatGPT users in the country. But not everyone sees them: OpenAI does not show advertising to Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Education accounts, nor to minors.
The ads only reach users on the Free and Go plans. That concentrates the advertising audience in the most casual, exploratory segment of ChatGPT usage — precisely the profile that is still comparing options without having decided to pay for anything, not even the tool itself.
The three ad formats: answer card, carousel and sidebar
Since March 2026 the platform has had three formats: the sponsored answer card (the base format, a single ad below the answer), the product carousel for e-commerce (image, price and direct purchase link), and the contextual sidebar placement, available on desktop only.
All three are always identified as sponsored content, without exception. For businesses with a product catalogue, the carousel is the most direct format; for B2B or high-consideration services, the answer card usually fits better with the moment at which it appears within the conversation.
Context hints: why you do not buy by keyword here
If in Google Ads the starting point is what the user types into the search box, in ChatGPT Ads the starting point is what the user is trying to solve across several messages. Context hints are the signals the platform extracts from that whole conversation, not from a single isolated query.
This completely changes how a campaign has to be prepared: you do not work from a keyword list, you work from the conversational scenario in which your product makes sense as an answer — much closer to defining a use case than to bidding on a search term.
What it costs to advertise in ChatGPT right now
The indicative cost ranges between €3 and €5 per click, with no mandatory minimum spend since self-service opened on 5 May 2026. Compared with the CPM of other channels, ChatGPT Ads can cost six to thirty times more per thousand impressions.
OpenAI justifies that difference by positioning ChatGPT as a “premium audience” context with high purchase intent — and the early CTR data (1.5%-3.2% versus 0.35% for display) suggests that, for now, that price premium comes with a real engagement premium.
What kind of business makes sense to try it now (and who should wait)
It makes sense to try it now if you sell a product or service with a relatively quick purchase decision and enough margin to absorb a €3-5 CPC. It is worth waiting if your average order value is low or if you still have no clear way to measure which conversions come from this channel versus the others.
Access also remains in a phased rollout in Europe: during this first stage, OpenAI grants access through its Ads Solutions team, partner agencies and technology partners, with direct access via Ads Manager expanding gradually.
Table: ChatGPT Ads versus Google Ads and Meta, at a glance
| ChatGPT Ads | Google Ads / Meta | |
|---|---|---|
| Ad selection | Context of the full conversation | Keyword / audience profile |
| Indicative CPC | €3-5 | Variable, generally lower |
| Who sees it | Free and Go plans only | The platform’s entire user base |
| Formats | Answer card, carousel, sidebar (desktop) | Multiple established formats |
How we work on ChatGPT Ads at Impactiq: context hints, creative and measurement
We design, launch and optimise ChatGPT Ads campaigns with a focus on three pieces: the context hints that define when your ad appears, creative adapted to the conversational format, and measurement connected to the rest of your paid media stack — so the data does not live in isolation from your other channels. You can see the full service at ChatGPT Ads at Impactiq.
Getting in before the channel saturates is usually worth money: when a new advertising channel matures, CPC tends to rise as more competition enters. And since we already work on GEO and visibility in AI answers, the same tracking panel we use to measure organic citation also helps us put paid performance in context.
What to ask before launching your first campaign
- Do we have real margin to absorb a €3-5 CPC with our current average order value?
- How are we going to measure this conversion against Google Ads and Meta, without duplicating attribution?
- Does our product fit the card, carousel or sidebar format, or do we need to define the use case better before launching?
- Do we already have access via Ads Manager, or do we need to go through a technology partner during this expansion phase?
There are now ads in ChatGPT. They are not yours yet.
